Spring in Eugene

Following a sun-filled week down in my hometown of Encinitas, California, I find myself back in partly cloudy Eugene for another term of school. As much as I truly miss the California sunshine of walking up and down the beach with my energetic basset-hound, it was nice to cool down and go north for another eleven or so weeks. This term should be exciting!
I am registered for four classes, sixteen college credits total. The time range for all these classes fluctuate from starting at 8-8:30 AM and into the early afternoon at 1:30. In simpler terms, I am finished with my classes by 1:45 PM everyday! Of course, that doesn't necessarily account for all the studying I will have to do on my own. The classes I am taking are: Math 251 (Calculus), Writing 122 (Composition), Creative Writing 240 (Intro to Fictional Writing), and Economics 201 (Intro to Economics).
I believe I do very well this term, with little to no obstacles truly stopping me from excelling in all the classes.
That's all I have to say right now, but I'm sure things will come up that I will be excited to write (or type?) about. Goodbye!

Wait.. I had a blog site? Huh.. funny.

It's been almost two years since my last post on this blog. I feel so... neglectful towards such a powerful such as a blogging site like this. Well, all is well. I mean, even if there isn't anybody actually reading these, it's kind of nice to look back and see the kind of things that are or were important to me at some time.
To say that a lot has happened over the past two years is definitely an understatement. Between April of 2010 and March 13th of 2012, I guess for starters I'll have to start with where I am. Currently, I am an undeclared University of Oregon student in Eugene, Oregon. I graduated from high school in June of 2011 with the intentions of majoring in architecture. Well, after a Fall term of dipping my feet in the water and trying it out, I made the decision in January this year to not major in architecture. Currently, I am possibly looking at a degree in business, maybe product design, or something around those lines. I'm not quite sure right now.
You're probably wondering what exactly prompted my decision to post something on the blog that I created over 3 years ago with the intentions of being used as a tracking record of my path to an education in design. Well, I guess I was just reminded of it recently by a friend and her blog. Maybe it's that.. or maybe it's that I just finished a book titled "Youth in Revolt" by C.D. Payne and find myself inspired to write anything. Last Thursday, for the first time ever, I invested in a small moleskin journal that is small enough to fit in my everyday pant pockets. In this journal, I write EVERYTHING. I don't know why I started it, but it might go back to the book I just finished this evening, because it was written in a sort of diary entry sort of format. Oh well. I can't tell if it's doing me good or bad though. Either way, I definitely find it enjoyable to write down my thoughts.
Well, I know I didn't write that much, but it seems sufficient enough to post. I'm in the tenth week of the winter term (finals next week!) and can almost see the sunny beaches of San Diego waiting for me, as well as my short but awesome basset hound. Oh, and the car I miss so dearly..

Sincerely (after a brief hiatus),
CARTER ROGERS

Long Time, No Talk

Hey Everybody.
This year has been very busy. Who would've thought that being a junior in high school would be difficult? Ha. Yeah. Anyways, although school has kept me busy, that doesn't mean I haven't been keeping up with my drawing! Pictures coming soon..

It's been a while since I've posted anything, so here it goes. The first semester of my junior year of high is coming to a close at the end of January. So much has happened this year, like having 3 teachers I had last year for 4 classes, as well as taking a much interesting car design class. The class is improving my quick sketches abilities, and is giving me new ways to look at coming up with new ideas. As this school year goes on, I'll have to start considering colleges to help with my dream of becoming a Disney Imagineer. My trips to Disneyland and other places have definitely been less compared to six months ago, however it gives me the chance to depend less on inspiration and more on personal thoughts. In less important but still kind of cool, my high school band is invited to march in the New Year's Day parade in London! This opportunity is rare, but will definitely make my senior year the best. Besides this stuff, the varsity football team went "undefeated" until of course the blow it in the semi-finals in order to finish the season perfectly, playoffs and all.

Well, this was short, but felt like this was necessary, considering my last post was in July! Happy Holidays, and dream big.

July Update

Well, it's nearing the end of July and I've had a fairly uneventful summer consisting of occasional weekend trip to Disneyland and the LA area, as well as a trip to San Francisco and taking a quick peak at the Pixar studios in Emeryville. Hopefully I'll be improving my surfing practice in the near future, just in time for the tourists to go away and for me to get back into it. See you all in August!!!

Jump of the Joker Receives a BIG Upgrade

A while back,
I posted about the long-term project titled "The Jump of the Joker", which is a roller coaster that goes to the extremes and goes to the great themes of Batman and the Joker. Well, after a couple times of playing around with it, I decided to go further into the project to enhance the overall experience and realty of the project. The upgrades include a representation of a "track switch" system that could be used to add or remove cars, smoothened track sections, darkened track sections, a service ladder, and overall scenary such as trees and hills. Below are a few picturess showing off these new improvements:

(Below)- A closer overall look at the "new and improved" JOJ.

JOJSceneWirePic3
(Above)- As seen in this picture, I tried to hide the "ugly truth" track support platform with various trees, as well as a hill created. These elements (in my opinion) do their job well as to (attempting to hide the supports.
(Below)- This picture shows a closer view at the important tree placement around the loading/unloading area. This view could possibly be a view a guest may see if this were a real coaster.

(Above)- This is a quick look at the very tall service ladder I created using various support elements such as L-beams and metal tubes. The process of creating it took a long time (4 to 5 hours total), but the overall effect adds a sense of reality. Note the many Free Points I had to create to make this work.
(Below)- This is a wireframe view of the large "track switch" I created to give a somewhat accurate representation of how the roller coaster cars may be added or removed from the circular track. For now the actual operation of adding/removing cars is unavailable, but hopefully a long awaited NL update will fix that.

(Below)- Here is a rendered view of a catwalk (located on the main tower/top of ladder) that was created to give a better realistic feel. Note the black portion of the track in the distance.

(Above)- A rendered view of the maintenance track switch. If you look closely, you can see that the three other sections of "track" are still color-coordinated with the rest of the ride.
(Below)- A rendered look at the detailed service ladder on the main support tower. The ladder was colored with green to stand out from the purple, as well as be coordinated correctly with the rest of the ride.

(Above)- Another look at the scenary placed around the eastern wing of the ride.
(Below)- A perspective view of what "coming out of the tunnel" may look like. The idea behind this is to have (after the first giant loop) to enter dark and frightening tunnel, with random twists and turns, until to reach the end of the tunnel, and become blinded by the sunlight.
JOJTunnelRendPic1
(Below)- The frightening view from the first jump. To add to the fear, I placed a brake section (a primary element of the ride in it's first development days) to actually the stop the car on a steep incline, have it at a hold for a few seconds, and raise the tension/adrenaline in the riders. The brakes, would release, and the intense thrill ride off the tower and into the Joker's game begins.

I hope you enjoyed this large update and thanks for reading. The current version of the "Jump of the Joker" roller coaster may possibly be uploaded to the internet. If this happens, I will post this action.

Parade Float Sketches

So it's been a busy past couple of weeks, especially with the school year ending and summer heading towards me. Thanks to some extra time, I got to finally do some fun sketch ideas. After a D23 member showing of the Pixar movie "Up", as well as just time to come up with ideas, I have a few sketches. Be sure to read what they're all about:)

(Below)-Another quick sketch of what a possible Space Mountain parade float would look like.

(Below)- This is, once again, a quick brainstorm sketch of what a "Up" float may look like, based on the successful Disney-Pixar film titled "Up".
